1778: ‘Naturism’ is used for the very first time in France by a Belgian man named Planchon in his book lauding a better way of life according to Nature.

1903: S. Gay creates a naturist colony in Bois-Fourgon (Essonne - FRANCE). In the same year, Paul Zimmermann founds the 1st gymnastics center in Germany.

1920: Kienné de Mongeot and Yvan de Laval found the Sparta Club, the first French naturist site. He was inspired by the close-to-nature way of life his mother brought him up to protect him from tuberculosis.

1931: Doctors André and Gaston Durville open Héliopolis naturist center on Ile du Levant (Island of the Rising sun) in South France (Var).

1932: The two doctors bring the idea of a naturist center (Physiopolis) on Ile du Platais in Paris area (Yvelines).
First naturist centers provide health care focusing on the curative properties of the sun, the sea and the wind.

1933: Albert Lecoq, futur founder of the French naturist movement, founds the North Gymnastics Center.

1936: Léo Lagrange, State sub-secretary for Sport and Leisure under Leon Blum’s governement, acknowledges official usefulness of naturalism.

1950: Albert and Christiane Lecoq found Montalivet heliotherapy center (Centre Hélio Marin) on the Atlantic coast (Gironde - FRANCE), the first European naturist holiday resort.
 Creation of the Naturism French Federation (FFN).

1961: Heliomonde opens its doors next to Paris

1974: Definite adoption of the international definition of naturism at the 14th Internation Naturism in Agde: ‘Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, characterised by a common nudity encouraging self-esteem, the respect of other people and environment’. This definition is still in force nowadays.

1975: Opening of Euronat (Atlantic coast - Gironde).

1993: Opening of the House of Naturism in Paris.

2001: Creation of France Espaces Naturistes (FEN).
